Laminam Countertops: What the Material Is, How It Behaves and How We Make It to Measure

Laminam countertops are cut from Laminam, an Italian ceramic surface produced from natural raw materials by sintering and supplied in large-format slabs. The surface is compact and non-porous, so it is never sealed and does not soak up wine, oil or coffee. Being ceramic, it carries no resin, so heat and sunlight do not change it. The large slabs keep joints to a minimum on long kitchen runs and islands, and the designs draw on natural stone, marble, wood, fabrics and aged metals.

Laminam makes the slabs; VideaStone turns them into finished countertops (worktops, in UK terms). We template each countertop on site (measure the kitchen and mark out exactly where the countertop will sit), cut and finish it in our own workshop in Latvia, deliver it across Northern Europe and fit and joint it on arrival. This guide covers what the material is, how it behaves in daily use, the thicknesses and finishes we offer and the ten colours in our Laminam countertops collection.

What is Laminam?

Laminam is a ceramic surface. Natural raw materials go through a process called sintering, which turns them into a compact, solid slab with no resin binder. The result is waterproof, stain-resistant and odourless, and it resists frost, scratches, deep abrasions, UV rays and chemical products.

Laminam groups its designs into series. The Collection series is the oldest: plain colours, which Laminam is known for in a polished finish it calls lucidato. Neve, the Collection colour in our range, comes in a Natural finish instead. I Naturali takes its looks from natural stone and marble; Diamond Cream, Emperador Extra, Bianco Lasa and both Pietra di Savoia colours in our range come from it. Another series is In-Side; our In-Side Pietra Piasentina belongs to it and has a natural stone base with sedimentary detail.

Is Laminam the same as a laminate countertop?

No. The names sound alike, but Laminam is a sintered ceramic, not a laminate. When you ask for a quote or compare materials, the terms to use are Laminam, ceramic or sintered stone. You can see it next to other ceramic surfaces in our ceramic countertops collection.

How a Laminam countertop behaves in daily use

  • Spills and stains. The surface is non-porous, so it never needs sealing, does not absorb water and resists everyday kitchen stains.
  • Hot pans. The ceramic resists heat and has no resin for heat to change. As with any countertop, we still suggest a trivet for very hot cookware.
  • Scratches and wear. Laminam resists scratches and deep abrasions, as well as chemical products.
  • Sun and frost. The material is UV stable, so the colour does not fade in direct sunlight, and it resists frost. That is why several of our colours can be used outdoors.
  • Cleaning. Normal household detergents are enough. There is no sealant to renew.

If you are weighing Laminam against quartz, read our quartz vs ceramic countertops comparison. For Laminam the key difference is that it contains no resin, so heat and sunlight do not change it. Other surfaces we fabricate and fit include Dekton by Cosentino and Nuovo Corso.

Thickness and surface finishes

We offer Laminam countertops in 12 mm and 20 mm. Nine of the ten Laminam colours in our catalogue come in both thicknesses; Pietra di Savoia Grigia comes in 12 mm only.

The finish decides how the countertop feels and how it catches the light. Across our Laminam range you will find:

  • Polished - high-gloss and reflective, it brings light into a room. Bianco Lasa is particularly effective in this finish as interior cladding.
  • Soft Touch - a smooth matte surface with a calm, understated look, offered on Bianco Statuario Venato.
  • Natural - a soft, understated matte character, as on Neve.
  • Bush Hammered (Bocciardata) - a rough, tactile texture reminiscent of hand-crafted stone, on both Pietra di Savoia colours, Bianco Lasa and Diamond Cream.
  • Gloss and Satin - the two finishes for Calacatta Oro Venato.
  • Burned Effect - offered on In-Side Pietra Piasentina, alongside Natural.

Diamond Cream and Emperador Extra also come with an R9 anti-slip finish, which gives the surface grip underfoot. That matters where the surface is underfoot or often wet, for example on a terrace.

The Laminam colours we fabricate

These are the ten Laminam colours in our catalogue, with the thicknesses and surfaces we list for each.

Colour Look Thickness Surface
Calacatta Oro Venato Italian Calacatta marble 12 mm, 20 mm Gloss, Satin
Bianco Statuario Venato Carrara marble: crystalline white with soft grey veins 12 mm, 20 mm Soft Touch, Polished
Bianco Lasa Pure white with fine grey veins 12 mm, 20 mm Polished, Bush Hammered
Emperador Extra Dramatic marble effect in a rich tone, R9 anti-slip 12 mm, 20 mm Polished, Natural
Diamond Cream Warm cream stone, R9 anti-slip 12 mm, 20 mm Polished, Bush Hammered
Neve Plain colour (Laminam's Collection series) 12 mm, 20 mm Natural
In-Side Pietra Piasentina Natural stone with sedimentary detail 12 mm, 20 mm Natural, Burned Effect
Pietra di Savoia Antracite Bocciardata Deep anthracite, textured 12 mm, 20 mm Bush Hammered
Pietra di Savoia Grigia Textured grey stone 12 mm Bush Hammered
Ossido Bruno Deep earthy brown with an oxidised character 12 mm, 20 mm Natural

A few pairings help when you are matching a colour to your cabinetry. Calacatta Oro Venato sits well with rich wood tones, dark contrast accents or crisp white cabinets. The white and grey of Bianco Statuario Venato combine with almost any material, which makes it a safe choice for kitchens and bathrooms alike. Ossido Bruno works with oak, walnut, natural timber and warm neutral cabinetry, and its layered tones give it a slightly industrial feel. For a stone look with texture, In-Side Pietra Piasentina brings sedimentary detail to an island or a feature wall.

Beyond the kitchen countertop

The same slab suits window sills and table tops, as well as splashbacks, upstands, bathroom vanities, cladding and feature walls. Because the material is UV stable and weather-resistant, In-Side Pietra Piasentina and Calacatta Oro Venato can be used indoors or outdoors. The textured Pietra di Savoia Antracite Bocciardata and Pietra di Savoia Grigia suit terraces, pool surrounds and other high-traffic areas.

How we turn a Laminam slab into a fitted countertop

We supply the material and take it all the way to a fitted countertop. The steps are the same for every Laminam colour:

  1. Templating on site. We measure your kitchen and template the space where the countertop will sit.
  2. Cutting and finishing in Latvia. In our own workshop we cut and shape the countertop to your exact measurements, profile the edges to the detail you choose and cut the openings for the sink and hob. The work is described on our countertop fabrication page.
  3. Delivery across Northern Europe. We deliver finished countertops regularly to Sweden, Denmark and the rest of Northern Europe; see delivery.
  4. Fitting and jointing on arrival. We install the countertop and make the joints on site.

Large-format slabs keep the number of joints low, which matters most on a long run or a kitchen island where a seam would sit in plain view.

What does a Laminam countertop cost?

Every countertop is cut to one kitchen's measurements, with its own edges and cut-outs, so the price depends on the kitchen. For a Laminam countertop, contact us with your plan and the colour you have in mind.

Frequently asked questions about Laminam countertops

What is a Laminam countertop made of?

A Laminam countertop is cut from a ceramic slab that Laminam produces from natural raw materials by sintering. The slab contains no resin, which is why heat and sunlight do not change it. VideaStone cuts and finishes the slab to your measurements in its own workshop in Latvia.

Does a Laminam countertop need sealing?

No. Laminam is non-porous, so it is never sealed and does not soak up spills such as wine, oil or coffee. Normal household detergents are enough to clean it.

Can you put a hot pan on a Laminam countertop?

Yes. Laminam resists heat, and because it is ceramic there is no resin for heat to change. As with any countertop, it is still sensible to use a trivet for very hot cookware.

Can Laminam be used outdoors?

Yes. Laminam is UV stable, so the colour does not fade in direct sunlight, and it resists frost. In-Side Pietra Piasentina and Calacatta Oro Venato can be used indoors or out, and the textured Pietra di Savoia colours suit terraces and pool surrounds.

Which thicknesses are Laminam countertops available in?

VideaStone offers Laminam countertops in 12 mm and 20 mm. Nine of the ten Laminam colours in its catalogue come in both thicknesses, while Pietra di Savoia Grigia comes in 12 mm only.
