Quartz vs Granite Countertops

Quartz countertops are engineered slabs of crushed quartz bound with resin: non-porous, easy to clean and never in need of sealing. Granite countertops are quarried natural stone: porous, so they need sealing, but far more heat tolerant than quartz and the only one of the two you can use outdoors. Both are sold as countertops across Northern Europe and as worktops in the UK; the material is the same either way.

Both will outlast the units they sit on, and neither is the wrong answer. The choice comes down to three practical things: how much heat lands on the surface, whether you want a colour you can repeat or a slab nobody else has, and where the countertop is going.

What engineered quartz is

Engineered quartz is a manufactured slab. Crushed quartz mineral is mixed with polymer resin and pigment, then pressed and cured into a slab of consistent thickness. Producers such as TechniStone and Silestone by Cosentino make it in controlled batches, so the colour you approve from a sample is the colour that arrives on site.

The resin is what makes quartz non-porous. Nothing soaks in, so red wine, coffee, oil, beetroot and citrus wipe off, and the surface never needs sealing - not on installation, not in five years, not ever. Quartz is also hard enough to resist the scratching of everyday kitchen use. Even so, cut on a chopping board rather than on the countertop: a board is cheap to replace, a countertop is not.

That same resin is the material's one genuine weakness. It is an organic binder and it does not like heat. A pan taken straight off the hob can leave a dull patch or a scorch mark that cannot be polished out, and a sharp temperature change beside a hob or sink can crack a slab. A trivet is not a nicety with quartz, it is the rule. Quartz is not UV stable either, so it belongs indoors; sunlight changes the colour of the resin over time, which is why manufacturers exclude exterior use. Most of the colours people picture when they think of a modern kitchen - clean whites, fine grey veining, solid blacks - sit in the quartz countertops range.

What granite is

Granite is an igneous rock made of quartz, feldspar and mica that cooled slowly underground, was quarried in blocks, then sawn into slabs and finished polished, honed or brushed. Nothing about it is engineered, and that is the point: every slab carries its own movement, grain and colour, and two slabs from the same quarry can look noticeably different. You are choosing a piece of stone, not a product code.

Because it is a natural rock, granite is porous. It is sealed when it is installed and resealed periodically, and how often depends on the stone itself: a dense dark granite absorbs far less than a pale, coarse-grained one. Resealing is a short job rather than a burden, but it is real maintenance, and it is the honest difference in day-to-day care between the two materials.

What granite gives back is tolerance. It formed under conditions no kitchen can reproduce, so a hot pan is far less likely to mark it than it is to mark quartz. Use a trivet anyway to protect the sealer, but the risk is different in kind. Granite is UV stable (its colour does not fade in sunlight), which makes it the material for outdoor kitchens, sunny window sills, balconies and garden bars. It is also considerably harder than marble, so it does not etch when lemon juice or vinegar is spilled on it. Which should you choose

Choose quartz if you want a colour that repeats across a long run, an island and a splashback without a visible change of character, or if you are matching several rooms or a later phase of the same project. It suits pale kitchens, because staining is not a worry, and it suits anyone who would rather not have a maintenance task in the diary. It is also the safer choice for bathrooms and vanities, where the surface is out of the sun and nothing hot ever lands on it.

Choose granite if you cook hard and pans end up on the countertop, if the surface will sit in direct sunlight or outdoors, or if you want a one-off stone rather than a manufactured colour. Granite is genuinely the better material in those three situations, and no amount of marketing changes that.

Price is the question everyone asks next, and the honest answer is that neither material is uniformly cheaper. Cost is driven by the individual stone rather than the category: how rare the colour is, how far it travelled, how much of the slab is wasted around cutouts, whether you want a mitred edge that reads as a thicker profile, whether there is a splashback, and how many sink and hob cutouts the job needs. Countertops are quoted by the square metre of finished surface, so the layout of your kitchen affects the total as much as the material name does.

Before you order either

See the material in the light it will live in. Showroom lighting flatters everything, and a grey that reads warm under halogen can read cold under daylight from a north-facing window. Take a sample home and look at it against your cabinet doors and floor before you commit.

With granite, ask to see the actual slab, not a photograph of the range. With quartz, a sample is enough, because the batch is consistent. In both cases the countertop is templated from the finished units rather than from the drawings, so the units need to be level and fixed before templating, and any sink, tap and hob should be on site by then. Long runs will have a seam somewhere; agreeing where it falls in advance is far better than discovering it after the countertops are fitted.

Is quartz or granite more heat resistant?

Granite is more heat resistant. It is a natural rock formed under heat and pressure, so a hot pan is far less likely to leave a permanent mark. Engineered quartz is bound with polymer resin, which can scorch, dull or crack under sudden temperature change. Use a trivet on both, but treat it as a hard rule on quartz.

Do quartz countertops need sealing?

No. Engineered quartz is non-porous, so liquids cannot soak in and there is nothing for a sealer to penetrate. Warm water, a soft cloth and mild washing-up liquid cover daily cleaning. Granite is the opposite: it is porous, so it is sealed when it is installed and resealed from time to time.

Can quartz countertops be used outdoors?

No. Engineered quartz is not UV stable, and the resin binder shifts colour in sunlight, so manufacturers exclude outdoor use. For an outdoor kitchen, a balcony bar or a window sill in direct sun, choose granite, which is UV stable, or a sintered surface (mineral powder pressed and fired into a slab, with no resin) such as Dekton, which is made for exterior use.

Which is easier to look after day to day?

Quartz, by a small margin. It never needs sealing and shrugs off wine, coffee, oil and citrus, so daily care is soap and water. Granite is easy to live with too, but it is sealed on installation and resealed periodically, and spills on a tired sealer should be wiped sooner rather than later.
