Ceramic countertops handle heat, UV light and outdoor use better than engineered quartz, while quartz offers a wider range of marble-look designs and a pattern that runs through the full thickness of the slab. Both are non-porous and neither needs sealing, so the choice usually comes down to heat, sunlight and the look you want. Both are sold as countertops across Northern Europe and as worktops in the UK; the material is the same either way.

Ceramic, porcelain and sintered stone: three names, one material
Ceramic, porcelain and sintered stone (a surface made by pressing and firing mineral powders at very high temperature, with no resin) are used interchangeably for countertops, and in most cases they describe the same kind of slab: natural minerals pressed under very high pressure and fired at high temperature, with no resin in the mix. Porcelain is the term inherited from tiles, sintered stone describes the pressing and firing process, and the brands sit across all three words. Dekton by Cosentino, Laminam and Sapienstone are the names you will meet most often. So if one supplier quotes a porcelain countertop and another a sintered stone countertop, you are comparing slabs from the same family, not two different technologies. North American sources call any countertop a countertop, which adds one more layer to the search results.
What each material is made of
Ceramic countertops are mineral all the way through. The powder is compacted and fired, so the finished slab behaves like a fired stone, with nothing organic in it to soften, yellow or burn. That single fact explains most of what follows.
Engineered quartz is built differently on purpose. It is roughly 90% ground quartz mineral bound with polymer resin and pigment, which is what makes it consistent from slab to slab, completely non-porous and pleasant to work with. Ranges such as TechniStone and Silestone by Cosentino are made this way. The resin is also the limitation, because resin reacts to heat and to UV light long before the quartz in it does.

Where ceramic has the edge
A ceramic kitchen countertop takes a pan straight from the oven without leaving a mark, and that is the single most common reason people move away from quartz after living with it. There is no resin, so there is nothing to soften where the heat lands. The same absence of resin makes the material UV stable (the colour does not fade in sunlight), which is why ceramic is the only one of the two that belongs on a terrace, in an outdoor kitchen or on a garden bar. It also shrugs off the acids and cleaners that reach a countertop in normal use.
The honest downside is fabrication. Ceramic is harder and more brittle than quartz, so cut-outs, mitred edges and long narrow runs demand experience and correct tooling, and a fabricator short of either will show it in the edges. The second thing to check is the pattern. On many thinner ceramic slabs the decoration sits on the surface, so an exposed edge does not continue the veining and a thick mitred edge can reveal a plainer core. Full-body ranges solve this, so ask whether the colour you like is available as one before you commit to a design with visible edges.
Where quartz has the edge
Choice comes first. The marble-look part of the quartz market is far deeper than the ceramic one, so if you are chasing a particular white with grey veining, the odds of finding it in quartz are better. Many quartz ranges also carry the pattern through the full thickness, which means a mitred edge or a thicker apron matches the surface without any planning around it.
Quartz is also softer to work, and that is not a small thing. Cut-outs, drainer grooves and profiled edges carry less risk, and adjustments on site are more predictable. It is non-porous, needs no sealing and resists everyday staining well.
Its limits are specific and worth stating plainly. The resin binder means heat can leave a permanent mark, so trivets are not optional, and the material is not UV stable, so quartz stays indoors. If any part of the run continues outside, that decision has already been made for you.
Which suits your kitchen
- You cook with cast iron and put pans down wherever there is space. Ceramic. Trivet discipline is a real constraint with quartz, and most households let it slip after a few months.
- Part of the countertop goes outside. Ceramic, and it is not a close call, because quartz is not UV stable.
- You have a specific marble look in mind. Start in quartz. If nothing matches, come back to ceramic, but expect a shorter shortlist.
- The design has a thick mitred edge or a waterfall island. Both materials work, but with ceramic confirm the slab is full-body first, or the edge will not match the top.
- Ordinary family kitchen, no outdoor run, no cast iron. Either is fine. Neither needs sealing, both wipe clean, and you can decide on looks alone.
Price the two on your actual layout rather than on the material label. The slab is only part of the job, since the number of cut-outs, the edge detail and the joins all change the fabrication work, and a cheaper slab in a demanding layout can finish above a more expensive slab in a simple one.
